Towards multilingual academic literacy testing for Secondary and Higher Education

Project Aims:

Develop a translation protocol for academic literacy tests (this protocol will also consider the possibility of bias in translations) and translate and refine academic literacy tests for the following languages English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Setswana and Sesotho

 

Project Deliverables:

  1. Literature Survey
  2. Report on translation/transaction protocol for academic literacy tests
  3. Translation/Transcreation Methodology
  4. Report on method of adaptation and back translation (the latter in particular for quality assurance)
  5. Development of translation protocol
  6. Quantitative and Qualitative Procedures
  7. Statistical analyses; differences in terms of reliability-alpha values-for purpose of test equivalence; t-tests for mean score differences; differences in item properties (facility value and discrimination indexes); factor analyses
  8. Interviews; translation experts and tests experts for translation protocol and interpretation of results- this is particular important to check for bias
  9. Extension of SADiLaR platform
  10. Translation of tests and training materials
