The workshop brought together postgraduate students and interested staff members for a full day dedicated to building practical knowledge around research data management, ethics, repositories, and the process of turning research data into a data paper.

The aims of the workshop were to equip attendees with the tools and understanding they need to manage their research data responsibly from the outset, and to show them that their data has value and publication potential well beyond the original study.

The day opened with a welcome and contextualisation from Mr David Blignaut, setting the tone for what lay ahead. This was followed by a discussion on what data in the humanities actually look like and how researchers can plan for it from the start of a project. Jessica Mabaso then introduced attendees to SADiLaR’s ESCALATOR programme and the support it offers to researchers working with digital methods and data. Dr Karabo Maiyane led a practical session on ethics, helping participants think through the considerations involved in collecting, storing, and sharing research data responsibly. Junneth Esau and Faith Blignaut then demonstrated the NMU data repository, walking participants through ways to make use of it for their own research outputs.

The afternoon shifted focus towards publication. A presentation on what a data paper consists of opened the second half of the day, followed by a practical session exploring whether and how research data can be used after a study is complete, facilitated by participants alongside Dr Johannes Sibeko and supported by Dr Benito Trollip. The day’s longest session gave participants hands-on time to work through describing their own research data. They had started the real work of thinking through their own data management plans. The day closed with a look at future directions from Prof Nomalanga Mkhize.

The response from attendees made it clear that there is strong appetite to engage more. Ideally, a follow-up workshop will offer more dedicated time for students to develop their own data management plans and, where relevant, work towards drafting their own data papers. SADiLaR and NMU look forward to building on the momentum from this workshop and continuing to support postgraduate students and researchers in managing and publishing their research data with confidence.

Written by: Benito Trollip

13 August 2026 On 15 July 2026, SADiLaR partnered with Nelson Mandela University (NMU) to host “From Research Data Management to a Data Paper” at the Ocean Science Conference Centre at NMU.
